You have to look the dad dead in the eye for a couple seconds when shaking his hand. This will show respect. The mom, you ask her if you can hug her instead of shaking hands. Tell her you are more of a hugger! This will build a more emotional connection which is more important to women!

The best way to start the conversation would be to say “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve heard so many nice things about you.” Be prepared to be asked what those might be, so if necessary ask your girlfriend for possibilities - like her pride in their professional achievements, or her mom or dad’s great cooking, etc.

Anything complimentary you can say about their daughter (rated PG, of course) will be helpful, for example, “I admire Emma’s ability to pull a team together and develop a worthwhile project. That charity marathon she organized was amazing.” Let them know that you admire their daughter as a person - for a wide range of qualities and talents.
