Attics can provide us with a lot of extra storage space, but they’re frequently underutilized or carelessly stuffed with a litany of items we’ll never use again. This can be a wasted opportunity, especially if we have items cluttering up our home that we still want to keep. So why not put this space to good use? 1. Ensure Its Safety
Safety is an extremely important point to consider. You’ll want to check all potential concerns off your list before proceeding with anything else. Make sure you’re entering your attic correctly—use a sturdy ladder, never a chair or a stool. Check the structure of your attic and make sure there are no stray nails sticking out of the wood.
2. Clean
If you’ve been neglecting your attic, it may not exactly be the cleanest area in your home. That means it’s time to put on the rubber gloves and completely scrub the area. If you spot any leaks or evidence of moisture, check for any signs of mold or pests. If necessary, have a professional come in to evaluate the area.
3. Insulate
You want to be sure that your attic is well-insulated before filling it with items that hold personal value. The temperature in your attic is often drastically different from that of the rest of your home, and fluctuating temperatures and extreme cold or heat can damage your belongings. To prevent the loss of heat in the winter—or the accumulation of too much heat in the summer—have professionals properly insulate your walls.
4. Install Lights
We can all easily visualize the stereotype of the single flickering lightbulb in the attic. If you plan on spending a decent amount of time in the room, you’ll want to consider the area’s lighting situation. If necessary, hire an expert to properly wire and light your attic.
5. Keep Things Organized
A messy, unorganized storage space is everyone’s worst nightmare, and this can cause you to never want to revisit your attic. Research some storage tips and be sure to maintain them. Label everything and return items to their proper places after using them.
