Best Superhero Video Games of All-Time

While superhero movies have flourished on the big screen for decades, the video games produced are mediocre at best. This is in large part due to superhero games trying too hard to tie into movies, and they rarely stand up to the film. However, things have changed in the last decade. As of now, here are the best superhero video games of all-time.

Spider-Man 2

Perhaps the best superhero movie tie-in game, the Spider-Man 2 video game came out in 2004 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, and PC. Many people often praise Spider-Man 2 for its web-swinging and open-world gameplay, which influenced many future Spider-Man games.

Batman: Arkham Knight

Batman: Arkham Knight was the last game released in Rocksteady’s groundbreaking trilogy in 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The main highlight is that Arkham Knight allows players to explore a massive open-world Gotham City and get behind the wheel of the Batmobile.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

The first game in Rocksteady’s trilogy released in 2009 changed superhero video games forever. Batman: Arkham Asylum follows the dark knight facing off against some of the biggest rogues in an original story with stunning visuals and groundbreaking gameplay. Batman: Arkham Asylum has become the blueprint for every superhero game that has proceeded it—its legacy will live on as one of the best superhero video games of all-time.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac is the newest game on this list, coming out in 2018. Marvel’s Spider-Man is a perfect blend of features from both Spider-Man 2 and Arkham Asylum. The game also has a compelling story that captures the true essence of one of Marvel’s most beloved characters.

Batman: Arkham City

While there are already three other Batman: Arkham titles on this list, Arkham City is not just the best of the series, but the pinnacle of superhero video games. Arkham City hit store shelves in 2009 and expanded on the groundwork built in Arkham Asylum and took it to new heights. In addition to the upgraded gameplay and more iconic Batman foes, Arkham City tells one of the best Batman stories ever.

Our list might comprise of Batman and Spider-Man games, but this year we are getting an Avengers game from Square Enix. Not to mention there are more superhero games in the pipeline from Warner Bros. Montreal and Batman: Arkham developer Rocksteady. There’s a good chance we hear more about these games at one of this year’s upcoming video game conventions.
