Things You Should Know Before Camping in the Mountains

Whether you prefer to camp with only your backpack or an off-road vehicle full of supplies, you need to make sure you are ready for the mountains. Although they provide stunning views, mountains are some of the most dangerous places to camp. To have a safe trip, here are a few things you should know before camping in the mountains.

Essentials To Pack

If you plan to camp away from civilization, you’ll need to prepare for any future situations. Since you will be in the mountains, pack any essentials you think you might need for your trip. The items below are just a few of the supplies you will need to pack.

  • Clothing for warm and very cold weather
  • Waterproof tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks
  • Extra rope, stakes, and climbing gear (if necessary)
  • Electrolytes and extra food that will not spoil
  • Weatherproof clothing and the best slip-resistant boots to keep your feet safe, warm, and dry
  • Lotion, sunscreen, lip balm, and eye drops

Camp on the Leeward Side

No one wants to chase their supplies across the campsite and deal with the effects of windburn. Since you want to avoid the strong winds, set up camp on the leeward side of the mountain. Most of the wind will come from the opposite side, and you will have the whole mountain blocking it for you.

Train Your Muscles

Another thing you should know before camping in the mountains is to train your muscles for the journey. If you plan to hike to your destination, it is a great idea to train your muscles at home or the gym, starting a couple of weeks in advance. If you do not prepare your body for the journey, you will be very sore, and it will be challenging to hike back down the mountain.

Protection From Wildlife

Mountain lions, goats, rams, and bears are just a few examples of the types of animals that live in the mountains. To protect yourself from attacks, pack an airhorn, pepper spray, a taser, and other items you can use to defend yourself. Because camping alone is dangerous, make sure you always go hiking or camping with a group of people.

For your next camping adventure in the mountains, make sure you use these tips for a fun, exciting, and safe trip.
