How does it work?
If you are eating less than 50g of carbs in your day then your body will begin to run out of blood sugar, or fuel, that it has easy access to. Usually, this takes around 3 to 4 days. Your body will then begin to break down the harder-to-digest foods such as protein and fat in order to turn them into energy. This will help you lose weight. This process is called Ketosis. However, it should be noted here that ketogenic diets tend to be focused on short-term goals rather than on the pursuit of a healthy life.
Who does it suit?
The people who tend to use this diet are looking to lose weight quickly. It can be used by boxers looking to make weight or runners looking to stay light before a run. However, this is not the only use it has. It can also be used to help with medical conditions such as epilepsy and heart disease. A ketogenic diet can be effective for weight loss. But it is not sustainable, and you will start to notice that you are losing less weight the longer you continue it. It is most effective in the first 3 to 6 months especially compared to other diets. It takes more energy to change fat into energy and fuel than it does carbs. Additionally eating more proteins and fats will give you more of a filling meal which will likely reduce your snacking appetites. Again, it should be stressed that this diet is a short-term plan and not one for the long term.
