Growing up as a child of the 80s, Nike had always been this established brand and household name. I didn’t know the back story until I picked up Phil Knight’s memoir. With a dare-to-dream attitude and hustle, he brought Tiger shoes to the US, and in the face of losing everything, he built a lifestyle brand empire.

From his relationship with Steve Prefontaine to the untimely death of his son, Matthew, his story is heartfelt. His running coach, partner and mentor, had said if you have a body, you’re an athlete. It was a revolutionary concept at the time, and it still inspires to this day as Nike’s mission.

The Nike story is a lesson in survival and the importance of living with purpose.
