Mysteries Of An Ancient King | 6 Best Books About King David

Go beyond the religious texts with amazing stories about this real life ancient King

King David was an actual King of Israel and Judah who has an incredible rags to riches story. A well-referenced character in the Bible and other religious texts, King David has a rich history that everyone should read up about.

These 6 books all take a different perspective of his life and act as puzzle pieces. Once you read all 6, this ancient king’s life is completely exposed and known to you. And that’s pretty cool if you have the time.

If not, our top pick is Rooted by Liebscher, appropriately placed number one on our list. Give it a try!

One of my favorite books, Rooted is about the behind-the-scenes life of King David. It gives helpful context to David’s upbringing, early years, and the parts of his life that shaped his rule and prepared him for the crown.

#2 And David Perceived He Was King by Dale L. Mast

And David Perceived He Was King by Dale L. Mast
Who recommended this book?
This was recommended by Nick Galov from Review42.

This book is one of the best books about King David, as it’s interesting on both a religious and philosophical level. As the name implies, it’s about perception and illustrates King David’s journey, which is filled with introspection and valuable life lessons that are valuable to this day. The book challenges the reader to draw parallels between King David and their own lives, leaving room for personal interpretation on subjects such as the meaning of perfection.

Overall it’s an easy read, with a well-worded narrative itself is very well worded, that presents King David in a real and tangible way for all audiences. Originally I received it as a gift, and read it without any expectations. I was positively surprised and never would have imagined the relatability between old biblical scripture and self-realizations that still apply to our lives in this day and age.

#3 A Tale of Three Kings by Gene Edwards

A Tale of Three Kings by Gene Edwards
Who recommended this book?
This was recommended by Melissa Tumino from Think About Such Things.

The Tale of Three Kings goes into the life of King David, his son King Absalom, and David’s father-in-law King Saul. The author does a masterfully job on showing you through the life of David about forgiveness, revenge, and disappointment. David deals with these two men who have both attempted to kill him because they felt he was a threat to their kingdoms. An incredible read for anyone who is in or wanting to be in some form of leadership. But an important story to read if you have been wronged by someone.

#5 The Historical David by Joel Baden

A great narrative on the true to life version of David and not the fabled version often referenced in history. It paints a darker image of David.

#6 Fierce Grace: 30 Days with King David by Stephen R. Morefield

Fierce Grace: 30 Days with King David by Stephen R. Morefield

For thousands of years, David has been revered as a heroic figure by Jews, Christians and Muslims around the world. Even secular writers like Malcolm Gladwell find lessons for successful living in David’s life.

Now, pastor, Bible scholar and leadership coach Larry Buxton has collected 30 highlights from the turbulent life of this ancient king in 30 Days with King David. Starting with David’s boyhood and exploring his entire life, Buxton draws a series of lessons for aspiring leaders today. The many themes he lifts up include: patience, humility, integrity, openness, forgiveness and justice. In David’s life, he sometimes failed to live up to his noble calling, which makes him all the more potent a figure for us to look toward today.
