5 Books About Photography

Photography is the art of framing, portraying and capturing the visual majesty and feeling we can observe with our eyes through the lens of a camera, but it’s so much more than just the gear and equipment you carry.

A real photographer has a trained eye to recognize the elements that would make their shot unique, and they leverage them to their benefit. Learn about photography with these books.

Book recommendation by Alice Bil-Szot from studioEPIC Photography

Out of all the books that I own (and frequently display in my studio) Shadowland – a retrospective of Gordon Anthony’s work is a standout gem. This book is great for a beginner to change the way we think about lighting, but is also fantastic for a seasoned professional. Gordon Anthony (1902 – 1989) was a master of the shadow and this book is full of amazing ideas. No book has inspired me in my work as much as this. Unfortunately this book is a rare find as it is out of print, but if can be bought on Amazon and other online used books resellers.

Behind every luminary, celebrity, and iconic legend, both living and deceased, there’s a great photographer. This book pays homage to the artistry and vision of Matthew Rolston, with a collection of images and essays of his famous subjects, including Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna and more. This Warhol protege has stepped out from behind his camera and into the spotlight with his intimate portrayal of our cultural icons during the 1980’s.
